Obituary for Deborah Kay Super

Deborah Super (Harvey) passed from this life to be with the Lord on April 2, 2019 at the age of 66. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, and sister. Born October 31, 1952 in Ronceverte, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Barbara (Carr) and the late Robin Harvey. Deb grew up in Philippi, WV and attended Philip Barbour High School before moving to Elkins and graduating from Elkins High School in 1970. She completed her Bachelor's in Education from West Virginia University in 1974, a Master's in English Education from WVU in 1980, and Master's in Gifted Education from Marshall University in 1982.
She and her husband, Joe Super, were married at the First Baptist Church in Elkins on July 19, 1981.
Deb served in multiple roles during a forty three-year career in the Randolph County Public Schools, working in Elkins Junior High School, Forest Hills/Elkins High School, and the Randolph County Technical Center. A love for English fueled her nearly 30 years in the classroom. During that same time, she also served as yearbook adviser, overseeing numerous award-winning publications. Leaving the classroom in 2003 did not mean leaving the students. She coordinated senior projects and work-based learning until her retirement in 2015. While at the Technical Center, she was recognized as a national presenter for SREB and the WVDE on Senior Projects and for Student Advising, a program she developed. Until very recently, she played the piano for the school choir, a role she was honored to fill for 22 years. Over the course of educational career, she also served as an adjunct professor of English, Education, and Music at Davis and Elkins College, Fairmont State University, Pierpont Community and Technical College, and most recently, Alderson and Broaddus University.
In addition to this passion for education, Deb was active in the community. A member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins for over forty years, she served on the Music Board, sang in the choir, served as the choral accompanist, church organist, played in the praise band, and started and directed the handbell choir. The handbell ministry she founded at the church included ringers of all ages, including a children's bell choir, and the Baptist Belles, which became known for performances of sacred, secular, and patriotic music throughout the area. She shared her vocal and instrumental talents at numerous community events and donated a piano to the Phil Gainer Community Center. She particularly enjoyed singing or playing at the yearly Lincoln Day Dinner, sponsored by the Randolph County Republican Party. Her multifaceted involvement in the GFWC Women's Club, to which she belonged for 19 years and most recently served as Chairman of the Music Committee. For 43 years she belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Laureate Alpha Delta Chapter of Elkins. One of Debbie's most cherished recognitions was from the Elkins area Women of Faith Organization for her years of musical contributions to the community.
As committed as Deb was to teaching and service, perhaps nothing brought her greater joy than being in the sun. From Spring to Fall she would be outside at every opportunity. Later in life she enjoyed planting roses. Her greatest pleasure, something she carried with her from childhood, was relaxing in the pool while reading Gone With the Wind ever summer.
She is survived by her mother, Barbara, and her husband, Joe, both of Elkins; son Josh and his wife, Katie, of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. Also surviving are one brother, Richard (Dick) Harvey and his wife Rose of Elkins; other surviving family members include loving nephews and nieces: Jeff and Deanna Harvey and their children Talia, Asher, and Garrett of Falls Church, Virginia, and Steve and Mallory Harvey of Wilmington, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 7 PM, Saturday. On Sunday, April 7, 2019 Mrs. Super will be moved to the First Baptist Church where final rites will be conducted at 3 PM. The Rev. Cyril Johnston and Pastor L. Scott Hamby will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins, WV. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Elkins High School Choir, 100 Kennedy Drive, Elkins, WV 26241 or to the First Baptist Church Handbell Choir, 412 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241.
