Obituary for Joseph Bernard Johnson

Joseph Bernard Johnson, son of the late John B. Johnson, and Pauline Johnson unexpectedly departed this life May 30th, 2019. He was born on June 21st, 1954. He married Sheila Fincham on June 25th, 1977. He is survived by his wife, Sheila Johnson, and four sons: Aaron (Amanda), Jeremy (Shannon), Chris (Crystal), and Andy (Jessica) Johnson. Additionally, his grandchildren: Grant, Bryce, Avenlea, Isaiah, and Josiah Johnson survive him. Also surviving are siblings: Judy (Mike) Taylor, Donna (Don) Megert, Debbie (David) Smith, and Steve (Pam) Johnson; and brothers and sister in laws: Keith (Sharon) Fincham, Mitchell Fincham, David (Debbie) Fincham, and Shelley (Craig) Hyre. He also leaves behind many special nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by brother Mark Romeo Johnson; and sister in law, Cindy Fincham.
Joe was a teacher, coach, and above all else a beloved son, grandfather, father and husband. Joe grew up in Coalton, WV and later moved with his family to Elkins, WV. Joe was an avid sports enthusiast who played basketball and baseball, eventually going to Potomac State and Davis and Elkins College to play baseball and pursue his physical education degree. Joe earned first team All-Conference playing baseball for Elkins High School. At Potomac State, Joe was Co-Captain of the baseball team in 1974. Joe also spent much of his time working in his father's upholstery shop, and spending countless hours on the family farm.
After college graduation, Joe was married to his wife, Sheila. He first entered the work force in Jolo, WV, where he coached football and taught physical education, health, and history. Thereafter, they moved back home to Elkins, WV. Joe taught and coached baseball at Coalton High School where he was an assistant varsity baseball coach winning the Single A state championship in 1985. After his time at Coalton, Joe taught at Elkins Middle school and he coached baseball at Elkins High School where he and his team earned another trip to Charleston. He was very proud of the teams both he and Mike Johnson coached, often telling stories about the boys who played for them, and the big games they won. Joe spent the rest of his career at Elkins Middle teaching health and physical education until his retirement. All through his Randolph County teaching career, Joe also worked with his father during the evenings at Johnson's Upholstery. He continued working the upholstery shop after his father passed away.

In addition to his coaching and professional career, Joe also made time for his family. Joe could often be found working on the family farm in Barbour County with his father John B., his brother Steve, and his boys. He taught his sons many life lessons on the farm. A strong work ethic was emphasized and a respect for the land was what he taught. Joe was also an avid outdoorsman who loved catching "smart fish" (trout) and spent his falls hunting squirrel and deer on the family farm. As he grew older, Joe and Sheila spent much of their free time with their grand babies and he always loved taking the family on fishing trips to Timberline and Blackwater. He enjoyed the trips he went with his family to Myrtle Beach, Chincoteague Island, St. George Island, Hawaii, and Jackson Hole.
To his last day, he never stopped teaching and sharing with his kids and grandchildren the things he knew and loved. It is difficult to accurately portray the life of a great man in such a short narrative, but what we do know is that Joe touched many lives. His family misses him dearly.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 7 PM, Saturday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 1 PM. The Reverend Theodore “Ted” Hartman will officiate and interment will follow at the Central Chapel Cemetery at Barbour County, WV.
