Obituary for Joseph William "Joe" Silvester

Joseph William “Joe” Silvester, age 89 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life early Wednesday morning, September 11, 2019 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown, WV, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of WV Caring.
He was born Friday, April 11, 1930 at Coalton, WV a son of the late Romeo and Marie DiBacco Silvester. On January 6, 1970 at Chile, he was married to the former Idia SanMartin who survives. Also surviving are one son, William Henry “Will” Silvester and wife Tina of Sumter, SC; one daughter, Ingrid Jeanette Backus and companion Rod Lambert of Elkins; two sisters, Pauline Johnson of Elkins, and Magdalene “Maggie” DeMotto and husband Hugh of Red Creek; seven grandchildren, Mari-Douglas Nevels and companion Maleeke Gibson, Emily Etheridge Nevels, Carmen Marie Silvester, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Michelle Silvester, Joseph Benjamin “Joey” Backus, Noah Philip Backus, and Gianna Grace Backus; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are three brothers, John Edward “Johnny” Silvester, Anthony F. Silvester, and Vincent “Fred” Silvester; three sisters, Elizabeth Ann “Bay” May, and Helen R. “Dolly” Silvester and Mary Ferruso; and one grandson, infant Dominic Thomas Backus.
He was a graduate of Coalton High School with the Class of 1948. He attended seminary school in Ohio, and was a Missionary Priest in South America from 1958 to 1969. He received two Bachelor’s Degrees, one in Theology and the other in Philosophy. He received a Master’s Degree in Correctional Counseling and was a Licensed Social Worker. He worked at the Huttonsville Correctional Center for twenty-five years, retiring as Associate Warden in 1995. He then worked for Appalachian Community Health where he administered Psycho Educational Evaluations from 1996 to January of 2019.
He enjoyed watching sports, loved gardening and cooking. He especially cherished spending time with his family and his grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 7 PM, Friday. On Friday, at 6:45 PM, at the funeral home, a wake service will be recited. On Saturday, September 14, 2019, Mr. Silvester will be moved to the Saint Brendan Catholic Church at Elkins, WV where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM. Father James E. O'Connor and Rev. Mr. John Sarraga will be the celebrants. Interment will follow at the Saint Brendan Cemetery at Elkins, WV.
