Obituary for Richard Brooks Walden

Coach Richard Brooks (“Dick” “Streamy”) Walden, age 89 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the Davis Medical Center Emergency Department with his loving family at his side.
He was born Saturday, February 16, 1929 at Elkins, WV a son of the late George “Pop” and Thelma Purkey Walden. He is survived by his wife Betty Wright Walden who he married May 23, 1952; his daughter Barbara Louise (Ed) Tyre of Elkins; and two grandsons Richard Edward Tyre and Matthew Albert Tyre, both of Orlando, FL.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death were three brothers, Thomas Walden, Ronald “Tim” Walden and infant William Walden and one sister Patty Rosencrance.
Educated in Elkins, he attended Elkins Third Ward School, Elkins Junior High and Elkins High School where he was a standout athlete. He received his undergraduate degree in history and physical education from D & E before obtaining his M. A. from WVU.
His long teaching and coaching career began at Welch Jr. High achieving one perfect season in track, football and basketball. For a brief time, he was at Weston High before returning to McDowell County where he taught at Welch Jr. High, Welch High and Elkhorn Junior High, where he also served as principal. He was well-known in the state for his track, football and basketball coaching.
When the family returned to Elkins, he served as teacher and coach at Elkins Junior High before becoming principal at EJHS until his retirement. He was responsible for the middle school concept at EJHS.
He joined the Elkins National Guard Detachment in 1947 and retired as a captain of the Logan group. During the Bay of Pigs he served one year of active duty.
In 1953 Walden joined the Elkins Lions Club and remained a member of Lions until his death holding every office including PDG in 1982. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow and Leonard Jarrett.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins.
Mr. Walden’s request for cremation was honored. The family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Avenue, Elkins, WV on Sunday, December 16, 2018 from 2 PM to 3 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at the church, Sunday at 3 PM with the Rev. Brian Seders and the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by members of the WV National Guard Honor Guard Program and the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241 or the WV Lions Sight Conservation Foundation, c/o Pete Johnson, 373 Judges Court, Fayetteville, WV 25840.
