Obituary for Roy Lee Crickard

Roy Lee Crickard, age 94 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Thursday morning, May 2, 2019 after a short period of declining health.
Roy had just celebrated his 94th birthday having been born Saturday, April 4, 1925 at Valley Bend, WV to the late Clarence Warren and Bessie Mae Dick Crickard. On April 7, 1947 at Oakland, Maryland he was married to the former Helen Gray Barkley, who preceded him in death September 2, 2017. They had celebrated seventy years of marriage. Surviving are two daughters, Kathryn Lynn Rowe and husband Jack of Weirton, Susan Lee Teter and husband Alan of Elkins; one sister, Sandra Poling and husband Lyda of Glenmore; five grandchildren, Jamie Beth Rischitelli and husband Mike of Arden, NC, Kelly Nicole McDiffitt and husband Chris of Weirton, Tracey Lynn King and husband Brian of Weirton, Bradly Alan Teter and wife Jackie of Martinsburg, Melissa Sue Teter of Elkins; and two great granddaughters, Lindsey Teter and Avery King.
Preceding him in death are three brothers, Jimmie Franklin, Ray, and Paul Crickard; and two sisters, Anna Jane Crickard, and Hattie Weese.
Roy was a graduate of Beverly High School with the Class of 1944, and the I.B.E.W. Electrical School at Clarksburg. PFC Roy Crickard did his basic training at Camp Crowder, Missouri in 1944. He served during World War II with the 63rd Infantry Division, attached to the 11th Armed Division from 1944 to 1945. While serving in Berlin, on January of 1945, he was wounded, shot in both legs. He did his recovery at a London, England hospital. Roy received a Purple Heart for being wounded, bravery and service to his country. He was discharged on December 30, 1945.
He worked as an Electrician for various contractors all over the state. His first job as an electrician was in Pocahontas County at the time they began electrifying homes. He attended the First Baptist Church of Elkins for over seventy years, where he was a member of the Chancel Choir and served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and Trustee. He was also a member of the I.B.E.W. Union # 596 for close to seventy years, and the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had worked with Habitat for Humanity helping build numerous homes and also helped with building trailers that were sent to New Orleans for hurricane relief. He enjoyed hunting, and going to his cabin that he built with his grandson.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 12 Noon to 2 PM, Sunday, May 5, 2019. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Sunday, at 2 PM. The Rev. Linda Roberts and Pastor L. Scott Hamby will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV, where the WV Army National Guard Honor Guard, the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the JOY Adult Sunday School Class, in care of First Baptist Church, 412 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241.
