Obituary for Russell David "Russ" Isner, Jr.

Russell David Isner, Jr., of Crozet, VA and formerly of Elkins, WV passed away surrounded by his family on July 13, 2018. “Russ” or “Bud” was born on April 13, 1921 in Norfolk, son of Russell D. Isner, Sr. and Madge Mayo Isner. He completed early schooling in Cleveland, OH and Philadelphia, PA, then the family moved to Boston, MA where Russ attended Arlington High School and was captain of the football team graduating with the Class of 1939.
He enrolled in Dartmouth College in 1940 where he played varsity football and studied Business Administration. With the outbreak of WWII in his Sophomore year, Russ left school to answer the call of duty and enlisted in the Navy. After completing flight school in Jacksonville, FL he was assigned to the USS Bunker Hill (CV 17) and joined the 7th Fleet under Admiral Marc Mitscher. Russ piloted the F4U Corsair fighter aircraft on many combat missions during WW II, which included the first carrier raid on Japan. On May 11, 1945 the Bunker Hill was hit by two Kamikaze, severely damaged and suffered the loss of many men. Although badly crippled and close to sinking, Russ and the surviving crew managed to return to Bremerton, Washington via Pearl Harbor. Russ served his country with great distinction and his heroism earned him three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and numerous Air Medals and Bronze Stars.
After the war ended, Russ matriculated at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV where he received his Business degree and met Virginia Earle. They were married in October 1946 and their twins, David and Margaret Ann arrived in June 1947. About this time Russ and his father founded the Dutch Oven Bakery with 3 trucks, delivering breads, cakes and pastries to front doors. The bakery grew to comprise plants in Elkins, Morgantown and Charleston with more than 100 trucks. Russ continued sharing his love and talent for cooking and baking opening the Coffee Shoppe Restaurant in Morgantown, WV. He and Virginia retired in 1986 and returned to Elkins.
Russ delighted in the company of family and friends and could often be found cooking hot dogs on the grill in the back yard or reading on the front porch and was never far from a card game or from the TV to watch his beloved Mountaineers. Russ was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the links at the Elks Lodge golf course with Virginia and his friends and has three holes-in-one to his credit.
Russ devoted much of his time to volunteer activities in the community with the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elkins, where he served as chef for the buckwheat pancake breakfasts, and as a 61-year member of Elkins Lodge # 108 A. F. & A. M., the Royal Arch Masons, Pilgrim Commandery and the Osiris Shrine.
Russ is predeceased by his wife Virginia and sister Connie Gray. He is proudly survived by his son David Earle Isner and his wife Jennie (Holz) Isner of Chantilly, VA, his daughter, Margaret Ann (Isner) Andrews of Charlottesville, VA, grandchildren, Allison (Andrews) Teweles and husband Robert, Melissa (Isner) Woodling, and Jonathan Isner and his wife Elaine. He was lovingly referred to as “Dada” by his six beloved great-grandchildren; Hannah and Jackson Woodling, Brian and Maggie Teweles, and Lillian and Eleanor Isner. Also surviving are two nieces, Nancy Baker Berger and Suzi Baker Brown, and one nephew, Jeff Baker.
Graveside Services will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday July 17, 2018 at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins, WV. The Rev. Dr. Peter A. Vial will officiate and interment will follow where the Elkins Lodge # 108, A. F. & A. M. will conduct Masonic Graveside Rites. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends at Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 450 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, WV. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
