Obituary for Helen Arlene McCauley

Helen Arlene Phares McCauley, age 97 years, a resident of Elkins, WV departed this life Wednesday evening, August 28, 2019 at the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center with her loving family at her side and under the care of Mountain Hospice.
She was born Wednesday, December 7, 1921 at Stone Coal Community near Junior, WV the youngest of nine children born to the late James Tucker and Clara Bell Wilson Phares. On January 15, 1944 at Belington, WV she was married to Carlton Fred McCauley, who preceded her in death December 25, 2013. They had celebrated sixty-nine years of marriage. Surviving are one granddaughter, Annie of NJ; one grandson, Matthew and wife Portia of Elkins, along with daughter-in-law, Joetta McCauley of Buckhannon. She had many wonderful friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews.
Friends, Lola Spotloe, Sandi Keaton and Linda McCollam, neighbors, Van Broughton and Mary Higgins, and caretaker, Dottie Spessert were all special to her.
Preceding her in death are two sons, Barry Douglas McCauley in 2008 and David Allen McCauley in 2018, along with her three brothers, Earl, Paul, and Lee Don Phares; and five sisters, Gladys McCauley, Hallie Rowan, Catherine Phares, Celia Durett, and Wilda McCauley. Helen was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She attended the schools of Barbour County and graduated from Belington High School with the Class of 1939. After her marriage to Carlton, they resided in Clarksburg, WV and Bridgeport, where they raised their two sons at Maple Lake on Route 50. Helen was a homemaker, while her sons were being raised, and later was employed by Stone & Thomas Department Store at Middletown Mall in Fairmont. She worked there for ten years before moving to Elkins in 1980. After retiring they spent twenty-six winters in Zephyrhills, FL. After moving to Elkins, she volunteered at the Randolph County Senior Center for twelve years at the front desk. She loved arts and crafts and cooking Sunday dinners for her family. Helen was a member of the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church and the Randolph County Senior Center. Helen was an avid reader, was a marvelous cook, very creative, and an excellent artist, organist, and poet.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 11 AM to 1 PM, Friday, August 30, 2019. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Friday, at 1 PM. Annie McCauley will officiate and interment will follow at the Concord Cemetery near Belington, WV.
